Life in IraqiKurdistan.Christmas

Of course celebrating Christmas looks MUCH different here. For lots of reasons. For example:

• Our first Christmas where we haven't had a "White Christmas".
• No Grandma Shileny Kolaches or Grandma Kriener Chocolate Chip cookies.
• No never-ending game nights with family. Enjoying a beer or two to go along with it!
• No falling asleep to Christmas movies on our family's couch.
• No sitting next to the warm fire, enjoying Mama Bishop's Christmas table cloth. Or Mama Kriener's "Christmas city".
• No seeing family that you haven't seen for awhile (besides on Skype :0)
• Not being surrounded by things that make you think of the season from everywhere you go and things you see (The mall, homes decorated in christmas lights, Christmas trees in the windows, etc)

However, just because we are living in a country where the majority doesn't celebrate CHRISTmas, we have tried to not forget and to make this a memorable Christmas for us even though it was much different!

We tried to make our home a little more like-back-home.

It's really incredible some of the things we found here. There's a place called Holland Market, that's about the size of a convenience store, that we go to get almost all of our groceries. They had a FULL isle that was loaded with Christmas trees, ornaments, stockings, wrapping paper, other knick-nacks too! Can you believe it! ... it was pretty sweet!

Cute little stockings, huh!? Our candle on the top was our "fireplace". Try to look around all of our books (I should have at least straightened them up before this picture but you know what, this is what it normally looks like so you get the real effect! No picture posing here!)

Crafts: We even got a chance to make some handmade cards, and send a couple things back to our family for Christmas with our teammates who were going back to America. Andy and I always make each other cards. This year we also made Zander's gift. Thanks to our previous tennants old baby gate and my oh-so-creative husband. We got to give Zander this for Christmas!

Gifts: SGI came at the beginning of the month and brought back a few gifts from them, and from one of our sending churches. We know it's not all about gifts, but it was really nice to each be able to open a gift this Christmas.

Worship: Here's a picture of our gathering of other believers. We had a great Christmas eve service that was full of songs, Nativity Play put on by the kids, Advent candle, and of course fellowship afterwards with yummy cookies. :) Look at my cute little sheep!

We even had our version of "shoveling" here on Christmas Eve!

Neighbors: Christmas morning we were still in our jammies (I in my glasses, too) drinking some coffee and we had a visit from our good friends/neighbors with Christmas gifts in hand. A little awkward in this culture for people to be seeing each other in their Pj's (sweatpants style for the bishop's) but we were thankful for them and their friendship! They also came over later that day and partook in the Birthday cake. The next day, I made the "Shileny Christmas favorite" (Chili) and they came over to enjoy that with us too.

God has really been doing some sweet things here. Being able to sing Christmas songs IN SCHOOL! Seriously, in Iraq? PRAISE THE LORD!

So yeah... it was a GREAT CHRISTMAS... and a MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS...one we felt like we were able to invite people in and also being invited into celebration with those who are in our spiritual family in this city.

God does show his blessings through our small sacrifices and celebrating this Christmas was definitely an example of that.

ek Sal oo neef (1 and a half years old)

Z-man will actually be 19 months in a few days, but I always got so confused when I wasn't a mom on why moms always told their kids age in months. Confusing and so much thinking if you aren't a mom! At least I thought so and honestly can even get confusing if you ARE a mom! Anyway... here's some year and a half tid-bits!

• Don't have any 18 months stats, but we are pretty sure he's in the "normal" range :)
• Does a good job at following directions for example "Go get your sippy cup" however -if you can believe it- sometimes he doesn't want to follow directions, he says "Naaawwwwhhhh" (a stretched out and whinny NO) with his nose scrunched!
• likes to play "On your marks, get set, GO"
• loves to read books and turn the pages.
• is getting better at copying some words and expanding his vocab. It's not just ball, and dog now.
• Loves to watch baby einstein. (don't judge, sometimes a mamas got to do what a mama's got to do)
• Hates it when I'm cooking! I can't wait until he understands that I'm doing THAT for him too, not just ignoring him!
• Still taking 2 naps most days. Tried to move to one, but he's just way happier with 2.
• Has 14 teeth (Opa we try to brush nightly, don't worry!)

Daddy's little helper- Andy is building Zander's Christmas gift for him out of an old baby gate that was broken (surprise surprise) It is so precious to see Zander pretend like he's building it too! We haven't showed Zander what this contraption is yet and won't see it painted until Christmas!

Really anything that we do he likes to copy! When city water is on, most people clean their *driveways* with a hose and squiggy. He's imagining the water being there.

Kurdish Dancing- We went to our first Kurdish engagement party a couple weeks ago. It was a little overwhelming with the music so loud it would put most college clubs to shame and everyone grabbing us wanting to take their pictures with us. Anyway, he has always liked to dance but it will take some time to get this fancy footwork down

Scootin': This hippo was left here by the last tennants but until a couple weeks ago, he didn't want anything to do with it. His feet can touch now and can finally push himself along which is pretty precious to see him do! A new favorite toy for this little guy.

Christmas Decorating: It's quite amazing the things we can get in here. With a little effort we can find a Christmas tree, ornaments, lights, and wrapping paper! It's amazing how much having a tree lit up makes a difference around here to brighten up our Christmas season. Zander was more of a help this year than last, but still doesn't quite get it. Whenever he sees these ornaments he says "BAWWLLLLLLLL"

Roughin' it: Somedays this culture doesn't appreciate the "American nap schedule" So we are out and about during one of Z's normal nap times. This means he takes naps in some weird places!

Friends- Zander is not hurting for friends that's for sure! All the neighbor kids adore him and his long "yellow" curly hair. He's trying to get used to their affection though as they pick him up and kiss him like crazy. Sometimes he just needs a little space. Most times after playing with Kurdish friends he's ready for some quiet time in his room.

He also has grown quite fond of another family's kids from London (2 girls and a boy between ages 2 and 6) We try to have play dates every week and they get to spend time together at "Sunday School" too! Here's Jonny and Zander!

The Healer: Praises to God, who has been healing Zander's molescum on his back. Look how much better they look! They aren't raised anymore, just a few spots!

Coloring: Zander loves to color. Or at least he loves to play with his crayons. We can already tell he is going to be a "Man of Order" he likes to put them in piles, back in the box one by one, or lately he seems to like to compartmentalize them in his shirt sleeve!

Typical moments?!?: This is what happens after 5 mins. of allowing Zander to have FREE REIGN in the house.

Spoiled Brat

Yep, it's official. I am a spoiled brat. My sisters always told me so and now I believe it myself. Just last week, a college friend, Eric came to visit where he lived last year. His town happened to be a short hour away from Duhok. He emailed us, saying that he could bring some things with from America! Whuuu whoooo. Thanks Eric! High fives all around!

This is a GLIMPSE at what he brought for us that we can't get here. Big woman shoes, candy, English books, brownie mix, candy corn, Mac and Cheese, Chocolate Chips.... etc etc.!
I was so thankful that he was considerate to think of us, and for our mom's to send some things with and also a few friends. So why, WHY, one week later, am I being a big WHINNY pants!

Just yesterday, I had a breakdown that went a little something like this.

" ahhhhh, the chicken tastes like twine, the beef is 3x more expensive here, there is no low-fat yogurt, no lattes, the only kind of cereal we can get is Corn flakes, we might as well go vegetarian, there are mositqoes in our house all the time, it's already COLD in our house and the winter hasn't even come yet, Andy keeps hitting his head on our doorways...."

I better stop now, or I am just going to rekindle the fire.

The point is, I'm a stinkin' brat!

We get emails from a family that we support that is living in Africa in the bush. I'm complaining about mosquitos and I see this in their recent update......

I'm complaining about not having much of a variety here for food, and they have to prepare meals and eat this:

k- you won't even believe this... as I was uploading that photo I just saw a mouse run across the room. AHHHHHH! seriously, I'm having a hard time dealing right now! I'm such a panzy. I hopped on the kitchen chair saw it run under our sink/cabinet and then grabbed the computer and my tea and had to leave the kitchen, shut the door, and will now wait until Andy gets home so he can take care of the issue!

Anyway. ....Point is.... I think I need to buck up! It's time to just DEAL! It doesn't matter if I was in America or here, we stay the same people. So here I GO! (no I'm not quite ready yet to go "take care" of that mouse by myself.) But I will try to be thankful for what we DO have, not get angry about that mouse and freak out on Andy, and will learn some new bean recipes with excitement for a new challenge, and just swat that mosquito without hatred for probably biting my son, to just eat a little less regular yogurt so I don't need to worry about it being lowfat, DEAL with what's here. All the good, the bad, and the ugly!

I'll try to focus on the good. Like my chocolate chips :)

Life in IraqiKurdistan.Hospital

We knew it was going to happen sometime while we were here. A Hospital visit!

Zander started getting little bumps on his back around his birthday (May 26) after having a wicked stomach virus. Our doc. in Iowa City said that they were Mollescum and they would go away within a year, but to keep on eye on them. 7 months later, I have noticed that they are NOT going away and in the last week actually spreading quite rapidly to his chest. Then a couple days ago a woman was playing with him (like everyone does here) picking him up, squeezing his cheeks, etc. Then she noticed his back, and just like that as if he had leprosy, wanted NOTHING to do with him. Set him down on the ground and turned her back :( Talk about breaking a mama's heart!

Anyway... we know a pediatrician here who we showed Zander to, and she directed us to a dermatologist that is actually a mom of one of the students at CSM. Which was a huge blessing. We wanted to share about this experience. Mainly, so you would see (Grandma's especially) that the care here is wonderful! So we took our little sweetie love buns to Azadi Hospital.

A very nice man showed us the way. No English just implied "This way" with a head nod. We went through the security gate, and the check-in procedure. Which was much easier than in America. Basically "Oh your boy needs to be seen, give me the equivalent of $.50 (500 Iraqi Dinar) and go to the skin clinic." So we proceeded down the crowded hallway each person rushing to get to their clinic to get in line to be seen. We finally arrived at the Skin Clinic! Thank you to the kind man who got us here, for without him, we would not have found it :)

We were the first ones to get to the skin clinic (meanwhile the eye clinic was bustling with people trying to nudge their way to the front of the line in order to be seen first.

We sat down and within 15 seconds the dermatologist came out and said "Mr. Andy?" Implying she knew we were coming because of the connection we had with CSM. "Come in"

She looked at his back and knew without question what it was. "Unfortunately at his age we don't like to do anything for treatment because its a painful treatment especially with so many lesions for a child. But I will ask the Senior dermatologist what he thinks. Please wait."

-----5 minutes later.

A very nice man with about 5 students following him asks us to come in. (Azadi is a teaching hospital just like U of Iowa)

We showed him and again, very confidently told us the same thing. But added that if they are left alone there would be no scarring because the lesion is only on the top layer of skin, if they were to do the procedure (basically cut and remove the bump) they could cause scarring so it's best to leave the virus heal on it's own.) He was a very kind man, spoke English (even to his bright students) and said if we had any more questions or concerns to let him know. He suggested doing some research online.

So even though no medical treatment, ointment, etc was given. I have confirmation knowing that we just need to do our best treating it (wash clothes more often, less baths/showers, rough housing or anything else that would cause them to break open and spread.) and wait for the virus to pass. But I know that if we need anything, where we can go to get seen and cared for and believe it or not, pretty quickly, and cheap. (First thing that seems to take LESS time in Kurdistan than in America)

*** Please pray that these will NOT spread anymore, and they will start to heal.

Lov'n Duhok

Sure there are many things that are different and hard to get used to in here in Kurdistan. But there are some pretty sweet things too! In the last 24 hours we set up our volleyball net in our "garden" (Which we have come to realize that we were crazy for wanting to look else where, this garden is VERY hard to come by around here!)

So we invited our some neighborhood kids and enjoyed some friendly competetion:

Also, this week we did some major cleaning on our rooftop so we could enjoy playing up there on the nice days. When the sun is close to setting is our favorite time to chill up there. (about 5-6 pm)

We got some plastic chairs and a table so know we can enjoy meals outside, socializing, and quiet times. This morning we whipped out sweatshirts! It was just over 60 degrees!!!!!! I mean come on, how sweet is this setting!

I love my boys. I love the mountains. I love my coffee with some egg bake. I love cooler weather. Ahhhhh how refreshing! God is good!
